Strange Bedfellows

The reason why I named this post "Strange Bedfellows" is based on a report from many news sources that Texas Governor Rick Perry has expressed interest in trying to bring the San Diego Chargers to the Alamodome. Of course, Rick Perry has been trying to woo businesses out of California (Considering how high those California taxes are, I can't blame him for trying), so it would make perfect sense. But Perry's aspirations of swapping out the "Diego" for the "Antonio" isn't the first time that politicians have dabbled into the foray of the sports world.

  • Pennsylvania Governor Tom Corbett sued the NCAA over penalties handed down to Penn State for the Jerry Sandusky sex-abuse scandals in early January of this year.
  • Speaking of the Governorship of Pennsylvania (in a less heinous case), former Steelers receiver Lynn Swann tried to run for the Keystone State's governorship in 2006, but lost to Ed Rendell.
  • Former Tigers and Phillies pitcher Jim Bunning held office as a senator from Kentucky from 1999 to 2011. He was succeeded by Rand Paul, the son of Ron Paul.
  • Charles Barkley was considering running in the 2014 Alabama gubernational race, but backed off in 2009. Chuck is also a strong supporter of gay rights.
  • Before he became President of the United States, George W. Bush was the owner of the Texas Rangers. Of course, he didn't win a World Series during his tenure as owner.
